Whiting Petroleum (WLL) issued an update on its activity in Colorado where the company is developing the Niobrara formation at the Redtail project. The company has 109,920 gross or 74,741 net acres in Weld County.
Whiting Petroleum started a seven well exploratory program in 2010 composed of two vertical wells and five horizontal wells. The company released the status of these seven wells as of April 27, 2011.

Whiting Petroleum estimates that its acreage can accommodate 220 operated and 131 non operated wells using 320 acre spacing. The company said that the Niobrara Shale is at a depth between 5,500 and 6,500 feet and wells can be drilled and completed with a 5,000 foot lateral at a cost between $4 million and $5 million each.
